Notes from the Chair
Now that winter is past, it is time to begin thinking about the wonderful intellectual and social whirligig that is the ALA Annual Conference, held this year in Chicago. I would like to thank the many committee chairs and members and discussion group conveners for their efforts over the past year and months in planning for this conference. Check the WESS Wiki for updates and information about the times and locations of WESS programming, as they become available.
I would like to especially thank the 2009 Program Committee, chaired by Gordon Anderson, and our faithful sponsors for their generous financial support for our conference program, entitled "Situating Area Studies Librarianship in a Globalised World: New Directions, New Collections." The speakers will examine the new multi-, inter-, cross-disciplinary world of scholarship and an evolving cultural canon that embraces popular genres and media. How libraries respond to these phenomena will be the discussion point.
Due to the current financial strains that the WESS membership, their institutions, and our sponsors are facing, the Membership and Executive Committees decided to forgo the always delightful yet very expensive cruise event in Chicago. In its stead, the WESS Membership Committee is planning a group dinner for Sunday July 12. Watch WESS-L for details about the time and venue.
The discussion about the next WESS international conference will continue in Chicago, but the focus is beginning to shift from Spain in 2010 to possibly Berlin in 2012. The Planning Committee will meet on Sunday afternoon and welcomes all interested participants.
I hope to see you in Chicago!
