Introduction

In 2008, ACRL agreed to fund two WESS members to attend annual meetings/conferences of two different learned societies to make recruitment presentations on academic librarianship. Funding is in the form of reimbursements of up to $600 (up to $500 from ACRL and up to $100 from WESS). Reimbursements must be made between Sept. 1, 2008 and Aug. 31, 2009. Awards will be selected by an ad-hoc Subcommittee of the WESS Recruitment to the Profession Committee. The selection process will be ongoing as applications are received and awards will be made on a first-come first-served basis. Awardees will be required to assess the outcome of their presentations afterwards through a survey.

Guidelines

SELECTION COMMITTEE (mandated per Action Plan)
  • The Recruitment Committee Chair will appoint a three-person Subcommittee to evaluate applications and select awardees.
  • Two members of the Subcommittee will be Recruitment Committee members and one a WESS member outside the Recruitment Committee.
  • Selection Subcommittee members are excluded from submitting applications for the awards.
APPLICATION/SELECTION PROCESS
  • Selection will be on an ongoing basis beginning Sept. 1, 2008.
  • Applicants will be required to submit the following by e-mail to the Selection Subcommittee (via the Recruitment Committee Chair):
  • 1. A short abstract (50-100 words) of the presentation.
    2. Documentation of acceptance by meeting/conference organizers or invitation from meeting/conference organizers.
    3. An abbreviated CV (one page or shorter) outlining participation in WESS and/or other library groups.
SELECTION CRITERIA
  • Applicants must be WESS members in good standing and, preferably, with a record of participation in WESS and/or other library groups.
  • The meeting/conference of the learned society should be relevant to the purview of WESS.
  • Applicants must have the presentation accepted and/or have been invited to speak at the meeting/conference (mandated per Action Plan).
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
  • Awardees should prepare print and on-line resources for further information to distribute at their presentations and for possible addition to the WESS Recruitment Committee's Web resources. These should include:
  • 1. Copies of the WESS brochure.
    2. Web pages and handouts with links to recruitment resources within WESS, ACRL, and ALA.
    3. General information about academic librarianship (e.g., ALA-accredited library schools, employment prospects, etc.).
    4. Other library-related information relevant to the particular organization being addressed.
ASSESSMENT (mandated per Action Plan)
  • Together with the Selection Subcommittee, awardees will write a short survey to measure the effectiveness and impact of the presentation, which will be sent out to attendees via e-mail or given at the end of the presentation.
  • Awardees will request e-mail addresses of presentation attendees to disseminate an on-line survey after the presentation and/or further information, resources, and opportunities (e.g., WESS Job Shadowing Program).
  • The Selection Subcommittee will submit a brief report of the results of the program and awardees’ experiences to the Chair of the Recruitment Committee, which can be used for future promotion and/or publication.
  • The Recruitment Committee Chair will submit this report, along with a report of other Committee activities, to the WESS Executive Committee.
